BIRTH: Recorded in "Ohio Cemetery Records", extracted from the, "Old
Northwest Genealogical Quarterly" (1898-1912). Also recorded in Fretz
book of Headley genealogy.
SERVICE: Soldier in American Revolution. New Jersey State Archives
records. New Jersey records give the following information on Joseph
Headley:
(1) Private in Capt. John Petty's Company, First Regiment, Sussex
County
Militia, spring of 1777; also served 1 month as substitute for Leonard
Davenport.
(2) Private in Capt. Jacob Bockoven's Company, Colonel Aaron
Hankinson's Second
Regt., Sussex County Militia, served two months.
(3) Private in Capt. Thomas Hill's Company, Colonel Hankinson's
Second
Regiment, Sussex County Militia, 1777, served two months at Minnisink.
(4) Private, Company commanded by Ensign Wilhemus Westbrook, Second
Regiment,
Sussex County Militia, 1778, served one month on frontier.
(5) Private, Captain Thomas Hill's Company, Second Regiment, Sussex
County
Militia, spring of 1779, served two months.
(6) Private, Captain George Ribble's Company, New Jersey State
Troops, 1779,
for six months;(troops raised under Act of June 2, 1779, to serve
until December
15, 1779).
Received Certificate No. 311, dated May 1, 1784, signed by Joseph
Gaston, for
depreciation of his Continental pay in the Sussex County Militia.
During military service he was a resident of Sussex County, age 19
years, and a
resident of Licking County, Ohio, in 1832, at which time he applied
for a
pension for military service during the American Revolution. His
claim was
approved and he received a pension of $46.66 per annum for the rest of
his
life. This certification of claim was dated 7 June 1832.
DEATH: Federal Archives records of the final payment of his pension
gives date
of his death 27 August 1842, and that information is verified by the
signature
(mark) of his wife, Martha Headley. Also Ohio Cemetery Records,
Licking Co.
Inscription on tombstone at Licking County Cemetery reads:
"Headley--Joseph, husband of Martha, died Aug 27, 1842, aged 84
years. 'Be
all alike resigned, Jesus is a patient mind'."
The Fretz book of Headley genealogy states that his wife's maiden name
was
Riker, and that they emigrated from New Jersey in 1809 and settled
near
Zanesville, Ohio, and in 1816 near Licking Creek, near Jersey, Ohio.
Peter Headley, Joseph's son, built a cabin in the area; and Joseph and
Martha
lived with Peter until 1822, when they went to live with son, Lewis,
at
Jersey, Ohio.
