Hempstead is about 25 miles outside of Houston. The cemetary is
between
Waller and Hempstead. Waller is named for Leonard Waller Groce. From
"100
Days in Texas" by Wallace O. Chariton: Leonard Waller Groce was an
early
settler from Georgia who was active in supplying beef to the war
effort
(Alamo). He also operated Groce's Landing, started by his father, and
helped
fit out the "Twin Sister" cannons when they arrived from Cincinnati.

I visited the cemetary at Hempstead on 11/9/97 and made the following
list:
GROCE FAMILY CEMETARY
HEMPSTEAD, TX 11/9/97

290 North to Hempstead (pass fruit stands on both sides of road).
Just
before downtown Hempstead, there is a sign to the left that reads
Cemetary
(1st Street). Go to the end of the road. The road will end at the
main
cemetary. The Hebrew Cemetary is behind the main cemetary. The
Groce
plot is
around the center of the main cemetary.

David Groce of Houston told my cousins Janette & Bob Kemper about this
cemetary.
Their e-mail address is bobkemper@worldnet.att.net.

My g-grandfather was Ellison Monroe Gross m Mary M Kennedy, Mary d
8/14/1887
(d/o Robert Kennedy and Martha Vance). My grandmother Elnora Ann
Gross b
12/29/1879 d 6/10/1950 m Absolum Amos Tatum, Sr b 10/6/1876 d
10/7/1942.
My
older siblings related to me that my grandmother was always trying to
tell
them about her family who had gone to Texas in the early 1800's, but
being
very young, they didn't listen. Now we are digging.

Explanation of the change from Gross to Groce is in the forwarded
message.

Jackie has a lot of Groce information, and we are working on
connecting
Joshua, Jared, and Solomon. Since our g-grandfather's (Ellison Monroe
Gross)
g-grandmother's last name was Ellison, Jared's middle name was
Ellison and
Jared was from Lincoln Co, GA, there should be a connection. Found in
the
Brazoria County Museum website: Sarah Ann Groce (d/o Jared Groce) m
William
Harris Wharton (Wharton, TX is named for him - he was a statesman).
Sarah
Ann moved to Houston after her husband's and father's death. Jared
was the
richest man in the colony, but Sarah Ann died in poverty. Jared owned
most
of Sabine Co, TX. I have a copy of the deed. Since we have not been
able
to
connect Jared with our Grosses, do you want a copy of all that Jackie
is
sending me?

Larry, I feel like my JOSHUA was somehow related to JARED GROCE who
had
a
son LARKIN, but not the same as my LARKIN. They both appear in TX abt
the
same; Leonard m. in Rapides Parish, LA abt the same time may Larkin
was
there, etc. Do you think it is possible that this JARED links with
your
bros SIMON & THEOBOLD?

"ANSON CO, NC: ABSTRACTS OF EARLY RECORDS,

the county be divided by PeeDee River & the
Court House. The Gross family
divided during the Revolution and Jared
Ellison GROSS, a patriot, moved to
Lincoln Co, GA & changed his name to
GROCE. His son, Jared E. Gross III
was one of Stephen F. Austin's 300 in
Texas in 1821." (Though we have
tried, we have been unable to connect
Joshua Groce to Jared's family.)
However, an ASA MITCHELL was also in
Austin's 300 and Larkin Groce sold his
share of Joshua Groce's land to an
ASHER G. MITCHELL in 1839 for $2,000..

Some of the information that I just sent to you from the cemetary
doesn't
mesh, but the headstones and monuments are very old and difficult to
read.
For example # 17) L W Groce b 1909 d 1874 (neat trick), but I copied
what
it
looked like in order to try to find documents to make corrections.

[733] 24 Nov. 1997, FROM LINDA VEAL, "There is a
cemetery off Hwy. 290, North out of Houston. It is just before the
city limits of Hempstead (1st. street) Jared, Leonard Waller and many
other Groce family members are buried there."
