!SERVICE: William Gilleland served in the Army of the Republic of
Texas,
Somervell Campaign, 1842-43, and those records are in the Texas State
Archives.
He also served as a private in the Civil War, enlisting at Willow
Springs in
Bell County for a period of six months on August 7, 1863. He was 39
years of
age.
!OCCUPATION: William was primarily a rancher, owning land and cattle
in several
places in Texas.
!RESIDENCE: Census records show William with his parents in Milam
County in
1850. In 1860 William and Rachel were in Bell County. In 1870, the
family
was living in Circleville, Williamson County, Texas. In 1880, they
were in
Bell County again, and by 1892, William and Rachel were in Randall
County,
Texas, where William died in 1897.
!BIRTH: Birth and death information on William Gilleland were found in
an
obituary written by his granddaughter, Ora Lee Gilleland. The Daniel
Gilleland family Bible has his birth date recorded and the date of
his marriage
to Rachel Elizabeth Allen.
